One of the questions that is often raised, when it comes to speech therapy worksheets and other at-home ”do it yourself” speech therapy curricula is whether or not the use of these types of worksheets and syllabi can be used as a substitute for the need for having your child undergo toddler speech therapy from a licensed pediatric speech pathologist?
So the next time you do a search for curriculum materials, skip the worksheets. Instead, consider resources that provide interactive experiences or consider sites that provide students with challenging problems. These sites will more likely engage students, foster discussion, and build a true understanding of the purpose and joy of learning math.
Math worksheets rarely ask students to think critically or creatively. They usually present multiple examples of the same problem type with the hope of reinforcing a skill or procedure. They do not challenge students to use higher order thinking skills such as comparing, analyzing, deducing, and synthesizing. These skills are built through activities in which students discover concepts, explore ideas, test a hypothesis, solve a problem, and discuss their thinking with their peers. Exploring concepts and problems in many different ways builds interest and promotes critical thinking.

Know the author’s background. This person needs to have a background in education and, ideally, should be trained in the latest educational methods, like brain-based teaching/learning. I personally would never use any materials with my child that didn’t specifically mention being ”brain-based.” I am not talking about just ”research-based.” I see more and more sites claiming to have research-based materials, but what I find is definitely NOT based on how the brains actually learns. Brain-based learning is relatively new in the educational world, but most worksheet sites and materials are using old science or, more often, no science at all.
When you start looking for printable worksheets on the internet, look for the following: age-specific worksheets that are designed to suit your child’s stage of development, rather than providing ’one-size-fits-all’ exercises; variety in the method of teaching used in each worksheet, so your child learns to understand the concepts and doesn’t get bored; worksheets that have been developed by a preschool teacher who knows what the school requirements are and what your child needs to learn; a set of worksheets that cover all learning areas is easier for you to work with, and will take up less of your time than searching for individual worksheets; and worksheets that progress from easy to more challenging to stimulate your child and prepare them for the next stage in their preschool education.
