Another problem with almost all worksheets is that they don’t prevent incorrect answers. Self-checking worksheets just let the student know they did something wrong–after the fact. I am a firm believer in the concept that, if at all possible, learning should be structured in small chunks in such a way that there is very little possibility for error. Worksheets often allow for mistakes to be made and then to be repeated many times. A mistake that gets practiced is extremely difficult to correct. This especially happens when worksheets are used as time fillers or baby sitters and the work isn’t really being supervised.
So what kinds of worksheets should you get? Anything where you feel that your child needs further drill. We often have this notion that worksheets are just for math. This, of course, is not true. While they are excellent tools for reviewing math facts such as the multiplication tables and division facts, they are just as useful for reviewing parts of speech or the states in the union.
Worksheets Are a Space to Figure Things Out. It doesn’t have to be this scientific thing. What I love about worksheets is how they give the reader the actual space to work out what the learning would look like for them, personally. How the information fits into their life. I have found sometimes you just need to give people a clean sheet of paper and say, ”Okay, figure it out on this sheet. What would it look like for you?”
Homeschool worksheets can also be used as rewards or just for fun! They can provide enjoyable yet constructive ”breaks” from a rigorous course of study. We have spent many afternoons completing word searches, crossword puzzles, and other types of activities, after finishing a unit.
I always advise students to keep a binder so they can store their Spanish worksheets in whatever order they like, they are an excellent revision tool that can be easily accessed and used prior to exams.
Generating Questions – Students need to be aware of their own background schema and how it relates to the current reading selection. Students determine what they already know about the topic, what they need to know, then what they learned. By developing their own questions, students increase their active processing of text which results in increased comprehension.
